The Story of Slope School

In 2011, we found a school that changed our lives forever. While researching at Harvard Business School Professor Clayton Christensen's think tank, we discovered Acton Academy — a hands-on learning laboratory for young people. What got our attention about this school? The humanness of it. It didn't quite feel like a school; it felt like a workshop run by young people, with brilliant design and an overarching storyline that made it all possible. What we saw were 6, 7, and 8-year olds who were acting like adults. They managed their time responsibly. They kindly assisted each other when in need. They were passionate about their work, and were learning the difficult life lesson of holding each other accountable - even their close friends. These young people knew they were Heroes on a Hero's Journey. Inspired to bring this model of learning to our mountain home in Utah, we founded the first Slope School near the mouth of Provo Canyon in Fall 2019. Since then, our community has grown to include campuses in Millcreek and Alpine- vibrant spaces where young people continue to explore, grow, and lead their own adventures in learning.

Thank you for joining us on this Hero’s Journey. We can’t wait to see what our community of young people will build next.
